As a former student, teacher, and eventually leader and consultant, that supported and coached new and experienced teachers in urban traditional schools, I thought I had education “figured out”. That is until I had my own child. In this talk, I will share my journey from my traditional school mindsets to embracing the Montessori philosophy as a lifestyle. Learning about this philosophy over a decade after completing my second education degree, made me aware of systemic issues that prevent this philosophy from becoming more widely known and adopted in working class and poor communities. I will share how it has completely taken over all aspects of my parenting choices but also influences the work that I continue to do in traditional school settings.
